You could reach out to OT/PT/Industrial Hygiene/Human Factors programs and suggest this topic for a Masters Thesis/Project. May not be as in depth as a research study but may be a good start.

I don't know of any articles for that directly, but  you could make some assuptions based off of the recently published study pertaining to direct access for PT.  If you didn't read it, here is a link to a PT site I visit frequently that talks about it:

Not so much for getting workers back to work faster, but making the process a little less expensive…which in most cases, the reason to get the worker back ASAP.
